A Solo Traveler’s Guide to Costa Rica Without a Car- Manuel Antonio & Liberia

Here’s a guide based on my personal adventures, casual chats with locals, and tips from my Airbnb host. If you’re planning to travel from Quepos downtown to Manuel Antonio National Park, or beyond to Liberia, this blog will give you all the practical details!

Getting Around Quepos and Manuel Antonio

  1. Take the White Bus (with "380" Marking):
Public buses are not only cheap (380 colons) but also super convenient. Look out for white buses with “380” written on them—that’s your ride!

    • Some stops are well-marked, while others are completely unmarked. Honestly, I wouldn’t have known where to wait if it weren’t for locals and my Airbnb host pointing them out. Be sure to ask your hotel where the nearest stop is.
    • I relied on this bus for three days straight, and it saved me so much money!
  2. Finding the Manuel Antonio National Park Entrance:
If it’s your first visit, don’t be surprised if everyone is a bit confused about where to get off the bus. The entrance isn’t immediately obvious.

    • When you see a parking lot, that’s your stop—yes, really!
    • Cross the street, walk straight ahead until the end, and turn right. If a kind stranger hadn’t told us, we might have stayed on the bus indefinitely.
  3. Quepos Farmer’s Market:

    • Friday: 3 PM to 9 PM
    • Saturday: 5 AM to 12 PM
Location: Quepos downtown. It’s a lovely spot to grab fresh produce and snacks!
  4. Shared Taxis:
One morning, I had to get to the downtown bus station. After waiting for the public bus for over 20 minutes with no luck, I decided to ask about a shared taxi.

    • Cost: 700 colons—a fair price! While it won’t drop you exactly at your destination, it gets you close enough.
    • Alternative Costs: Some taxis may charge USD 6 (approximately 8 USD is the standard rate). While more expensive than the bus, it’s still reasonable, especially if you’re in a hurry.
  5. Manuel Antonio National Park Hours:

    • Open: Wednesday to Monday, 7 AM to 3 PM
    • Closed: Tuesday
    • Book ticket online: the Airbnb owner suggests me to book it 2 days before.

Traveling from Quepos to Liberia (Playa Hermosa): A Budget-Friendly Option

Midway through my trip, I decided to meet a friend in Playa Hermosa (Guanacaste). Since I couldn’t find a shared shuttle from Quepos to Liberia, I opted for the public bus route. While it took some time to figure out, it worked well and saved me money. Here are the details:

********Two Bus Routes to Get to Liberia from Quepos********

  1. Quepos → San José → Liberia

    • Why Consider This Route?
Recommended by my Airbnb host, this route has more frequent departures, fewer delays, and better bus connections in San José.
    • Pros:
      • Easier to coordinate multiple bus schedules.
      • More accommodation options if you need to stop overnight in San José.
    • Cons:
      • It adds about an hour to the journey compared to traveling via Puntarenas.

Schedules may change, so always verify at the local bus station, google map: "Terminal de Buses de Quepos"

       2. Quepos → Puntarenas → Liberia (My Choice):
    • I couldn’t convince myself to backtrack all the way to San José. Here’s how I managed this route:

Step-by-Step Guide: Quepos to Puntarenas to Liberia
  • Step 1: Quepos → Puntarenas

    • Bus Company: Transports Quepos Puntarenas (TQP, green buses)
    • Departure Time: 7:30 AM (My experience)
    • Duration: Approximately 3.5 hours
    • Where I start: Terminal de Buses de Quepos
    • Cost: Check the current fare at the station. (I paid around 3,000 colons)

Upon arrival in Puntarenas, walk a few blocks (use Google Maps to locate “Reina Del Campo Bus Stop”). Be aware that there’s another bus company nearby, but you need to wait at the specific spot I’ve shown in my attached photo.

  • Step 2: Puntarenas → Liberia

    • Bus Company: Reina Del Campo
    • Departure Time: 12:45 PM
    • Duration: Around 3 hours
    • Cost: Check updated schedules on Reina Del Campo’s Facebook page. (I paid 3,400 colons)
-You can get their latest bus schedules from their facebook page
-Download Moovit: this app helped me find detailed stop-by-stop information for buses in Costa Rica.

Alternative Option: Flight

One of my travel acquaintances suggested checking flights. Both Quepos and Liberia have small airports, and it might be worth exploring if schedules align. Unfortunately, when I checked, no flights were available, but this could change.

This journey required a bit of patience and planning, but it was worth it for the savings and the chance to explore Costa Rica’s beautiful landscapes. I hope this guide helps fellow travelers navigate their way around Quepos, Manuel Antonio, and beyond! If you have a better option, welcome to leave message to help other traveler.
Pura Vida!

3. Quepos Farmer Market

5. Manuel Antonio

  • Book ticket online: Airbnb

  1. Quepos → San José → Liberia

  2. Quepos → Puntarenas → Liberia(我的選擇)

Liberia

Quepos → Puntarenas

(Terminal de Buses de Quepos)

Puntarenas → Liberia

Reina Del Campo

Pura Vida!
